Chimney Caps

Chimney Caps

A chimney cap is a custom metal cover that sits on top of your chimney. Our chimney caps are fully custom-fabricated to meet your needs – not only do they provide critical protection for your chimney, but they also serve as a beautiful architectural accent. If you have an exposed chimney, especially in Utah’s climate, a chimney cap is highly recommended. It will keep out rain, snow, debris, and critters, while also enhancing the look of your roofline.

  • 100% Custom Fabrication: We don’t do one-size-fits-all caps. Each chimney cap is individually crafted to your chimney’s exact dimensions and design. This means you get a perfect fit and a style that suits your home. Whether your chimney is round, square, or multi-flue, we will design a cap for it. (Our team has even handled complex multi-flue caps and historical retrofits – no project is too unique!) Being custom also allows for creative design elements – we can add arches, slopes, custom trim details, and more as desired. It’s your cap, built your way.
  • Superior Protection: Our caps are built to shield your chimney from the harshest elements. The top sheds rain and snow, keeping moisture out of the flue. We incorporate drip edges and overhangs to ensure water drips off away from the chimney crown. Side enclosures (with venting) keep out birds, rodents, and insects. By preventing water intrusion and animal nesting, a chimney cap prolongs the life of your chimney and reduces maintenance. It’s a small investment that can prevent big problems like cracked masonry or blocked flues.
  • Quality Metals: We fabricate chimney caps from premium materials that will last. Popular options include 24-ga painted steel (to match your roof or trim), stainless steel (excellent for longevity and a modern look), and copper (for a beautiful, classic appearance). Copper is a favorite for many high-end homes – it not only looks elegant, but it’s extremely durable (won’t rust) and can easily last decades. Whatever metal you choose, we ensure all seams are either welded, soldered, or riveted as needed, creating a sturdy one-piece structure.
  • Improved Performance: A well-designed chimney cap can actually improve your fireplace’s performance. By reducing downdrafts, it helps prevent sudden gusts of wind from entering the flue and pushing smoke back into your home. Our caps include appropriate venting (such as mesh or louvered openings) that allow smoke to exit freely while buffering the wind. They also help maintain a steady draft in the chimney, which means your fireplace or stove burns more efficiently. In short, a chimney cap makes your chimney safer and more effective in venting.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Don’t underestimate the visual impact of a chimney cap. Because we custom-build them, you have a lot of freedom in the style and finish. We can do anything from a simple low-profile cover to a grand copper chimney shroud with a hip or gable roof design on it. Adding a custom cap can really enhance your home’s curb appeal – it’s that finishing touch that makes the roofline look complete. And since we can paint steel caps any color or use decorative metals, we’ll ensure your cap either blends in or makes a statement, whichever you prefer.

  • Dimensions: Determined by your chimney. We will confirm the flue size(s), the chimney crown dimensions, and any clearance needed. Our caps typically overhang the chimney opening by a few inches on each side to ensure proper drip edge. For multi-flue chimneys, we fabricate a single cap to cover all flues together for a clean look. Height of the cap can be customized (generally a taller cap with more gap around the sides provides better draft venting).
  • Materials: Common choices include Galvanized Steel (24 ga) – cost-effective and can be color-matched; Stainless Steel (24 or 22 ga) – excellent durability, silver finish; Copper (16 oz) – premium look, very long-lasting; Aluminum – lighter weight and rust-proof (often used for very large caps or special color needs). All fasteners used are rust-resistant (stainless or galvanized screws, or rivets). For copper caps, we use copper rivets/solder for longevity.
  • Finish: Steel caps are painted with exterior-grade coatings (same paints used on metal roofing) for longevity. You can pick from our standard color chart to match your roof or trim. Copper is left natural (it will age to a patina unless you request a pre-patina or coating). Stainless is typically mill-finish (shiny), but can be brushed for a matte look. If using aluminum, we usually paint it as well, unless a mill finish is desired.
  • Mounting: Our chimney caps are designed for secure installation. Most caps have a built-in flange or skirt that anchors to the chimney structure. We provide pre-drilled holes or brackets as needed. Installation is usually done with masonry screws into the chimney crown or with clamping brackets on the flue – we’ll advise on the best method for your situation. The caps are removable for chimney cleaning if needed (usually by unscrewing the fasteners).
  • Standards: We design caps to meet relevant codes and best practices. The mesh size (if a spark arrestor screen is included) will be per code to block embers while allowing adequate airflow. Materials are non-combustible and able to withstand high temperatures from flue gases. Our designs ensure there’s no obstruction of the flue outlet – there’s ample clearance all around the flue exit (usually the vent openings are equal to or greater than the flue area, to not impede exhaust). In summary, your custom cap will be functional, safe, and built to last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I have a chimney cap – is it really necessary?

A chimney cap is highly recommended for any chimney that vents a fireplace, wood stove, or furnace. It’s more than just decoration. A cap keeps rain and snow out of your chimney, which protects the chimney liner and firebox from moisture damage (moisture can lead to cracks, spalling bricks, and mold). It also prevents animals (birds, raccoons, etc.) from entering and nesting in your chimney – a very common issue that chimney caps solve. Additionally, a cap will catch and stop leaves and debris, so you won’t get clogs. Overall, a chimney cap greatly extends the life of your chimney and improves safety by keeping it clear of obstructions.

Can you really build a cap to fit my odd-sized chimney?

Absolutely. Every chimney cap we build is custom, and we’ve yet to meet a chimney we couldn’t cover! We will take precise measurements of your chimney or work from your plans. Even if your chimney has multiple flue pipes or a non-standard shape, we will fabricate a custom cap that fits like a glove. Our company’s motto is essentially “if you can dream it, we can create it” – this applies to chimney caps as well. You’ll get a cap that is exactly tailored to your chimney’s dimensions and style. (And if for any reason it doesn’t fit perfectly, we’ll make it right – but our careful design process ensures a proper fit.)

What materials do you use for chimney caps?

We offer a few options, depending on your preference: Galvanized and Painted Steel (usually 24-gauge) is a popular and economical choice – we can paint it to match your roof or trim color. Stainless Steel is great if you want a silver look or have harsh conditions; it won’t rust and remains strong for decades. Copper is a premium option that offers a beautiful aesthetic – it starts bright penny-orange and ages into a green patina over time, which many people love. Copper and stainless are often chosen for their longevity (50+ years service life is common). We have also built caps from aluminum or zinc for specific situations. All of these metals are durable and suitable for chimney caps, so it comes down to budget and look.

Will a chimney cap affect how my fireplace works (draft or smoke)?

Yes – in a good way. A properly designed chimney cap can actually improve draft by reducing the effect of wind turbulences at the top of the chimney. Our caps are built with ventilation in mind: they allow smoke to flow out freely, but block wind from going straight down the flue. This means you’re less likely to get smoke puffing back into your home on windy days. Also, by keeping the flue dry and clean, the cap ensures the passage isn’t narrowed by debris or animal nests, which maintains the draft efficiency. You should not notice any negative impact on your fireplace’s performance – only positives (no downdrafts, consistent draft, and a safer flue).

I have a prefab metal fireplace chimney – can I still get a custom cap?

Yes. Many factory-built metal chimneys (the kind with a round metal flue pipe) benefit from a custom cap or shroud for both looks and protection. We can design decorative shrouds that attach to the top of the pipe or the chase, in compliance with safety codes (we’ll ensure proper clearance around the exhaust). These can greatly enhance the appearance of a metal chimney pipe and also help with rain protection. We always make sure not to impede the flue outlet – safety is paramount. If you’re unsure, give us the chimney model or a photo, and we’ll propose a solution. In most cases, a custom chimney cap/shroud is definitely possible and will upgrade the look of your home.
